Tuesday Rambling 5.24.22 – Reflecting On Anxiety

I’m rambling this morning about anxiety:

  • The sermon I prepared for this past Sunday looked at Jesus’ command to his disciples in the sermon on the mount:
  • “Do not be anxious.”
  • We know many struggle with ongoing anxiety, even disabling at times. We should not hesitate to treat such issues medically. Please feel no shame in doing so!
  • Jesus directed his disciples to avoid worry over what they would eat or wear.
  • God clearly knows our need for these and will provide as He values humans above nature.
  • The strongest encouragement ringing in my mind a couple days later: Seek first the kingdom.
  • Jesus taught His disciples to seek God’s kingdom first…and all these things will be added to you.
  • Prioritizing the kingdom of God helps confront anxiety?
  • Yes. If we don’t rule out medical treatment, we must not also rule out the power of the word of God.
  • Focusing on God’s kingdom generally means we find joy in serving others and turning the spotlight off our own problems.
  • We learn trusting God rather than feeling overwhelming burdens.
  • I don’t suggest God’s Word as a magic potion solution.
  • I encourage exposure to God’s power as essential to mental health.
  • Not neat, easy, simply, pretty, perfect, or tidy. The topic is tough. I’m glad the Bible addresses it directly.
  • Let me know how I can pray for you! burkholder.kevin@gmail.com

My beautiful bride, Julie, and I were married in 1999.  We are blessed to raise and shepherd three children.
Some of my hobbies are running, theology, the following baseball, and learning about the church in America in 2013.
I am passionate about the Word of God.  My faith in Jesus Christ and the resulting power of the Holy Spirit living inside me has brought me to a place in my life where I desire to look for God’s purposes in everything.  There is no other way to say it: I have been thoroughly changed by Jesus and I labor so others will live changed lives in Jesus as well.
