Some rambling about weekly gatherings where believers worship God:

  • As a disclaimer, let me say that most of the basis of these questions came from spending a month away from my local church on a sabbatical break. During that time I visited gatherings in 13 different churches and found myself challenged on a variety of levels.
  • Now, on to this week’s rambling…
  • Has a worship gathering ever bored you? Did the reason have more to do with the service or with you?
  • When it comes to congregational worship, do we require certain styles of music or preaching? Have we elevated our preferences above the God we claim to worship?
  • I know preaching should reflect passion, but can we only “hear from God” when a certain personality brings the message? Why?
  • What passages from the Bible form our view of congregational worship?
  • As you approach a worship gathering, do you look for someone to encourage? Do you secretly hope no one talks to you? Does that have to do with your personality or spiritual desire (or lack thereof)?
  • Even if a service doesn’t quite fit your “liking”, does the concept of God draw your heart upward?
  • Attending so many different services made me wonder: what do we do in our service that distracts? I definitely did observe some distracting elements.
  • To those who attend: do you prepare to worship in any way the night before or the morning of the service? Why or why not?
  • To those who lead: how can you better focus your congregation on truth while obeying Biblical guidelines for worship?
