Tuesday Rambling 3.10.20 – A Difficult Topic: Sexual Abuse in the Church
Rambling today about a tough topic: sexual abuse in the Church.
- Only a few rambling thoughts, perhaps best for those of you who haven’t considered the plague much.
- Yes, plague. Churches (not just Catholic) experience a plague of sexual abuse. The issue runs rampant.
- Why? Good question. A few thoughts…
- Power. Just like in the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Just like in the USA Gymnastics scandal. People in power either don’t believe what they hear, won’t believe it – or worse – know the truth and do nothing to stop it.
- Also, those in power in the legal system elevate relationship over justice. Hard to believe? Then orient yourself to reality, knowing those in power sometimes fail to protect those most vulnerable.
- Often, the testimony of a child or a family will simply not compare with the influence of a respected leader.
- Often, those accusations come with a cost. Victims who speak out receive shaming looks and comments, bringing an “outcast” status denying them the care they should receive.
- Worse, some in power in churches and denominations fear God’s reputation can’t take the hit of abuse in their church; so, they act to squelch it.
- Hopefully these brief rambling thoughts will make you consider your role in stopping it.
- If you don’t know, ask your church what measures they have in place.
- If you hold a leadership position, keep talking about the issue however uncomfortable it may seem. Education and promotion can keep those seeking to abuse away!
- Not a fun topic, but one worth considering.
